A complete tour of Pompeii, Herculaneum and Archaeological Museum

On August 24, 79 A.D., Vesuvius erupted after a long time, taking the people of the area by surprise. The eruption was atomic: everything around the volcano was erased. Of the destroyed cities, nothing remained. After 1700 years, the Vesuvian towns came back to light. In fact, humanity knew the two most important archaeological sites in the world: Herculaneum and Pompeii. Unlike Pompeii, buried by a layer of ash and lapilli, a lot of mud and lava submerged Herculaneum. Thanks to the mud, the materials have been sealed and well preserved: the wood, the fabrics and the foods have undergone a slow transformation, remaining almost petrified. In 1709, the Prince of Elboeuf, illustrious figure of the time, during the excavations in one of his many villas, discovered by chance the structures of the Theatre. Later, King Charles of Bourbon ordered in 1738 the official beginning of the excavations. The most important surprise was the magnificent Villa dei Papiri, in which was found the heritage of bronze and marble sculptures (now in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples) and the library of papyri (now in the National Library of Naples). From then until today it is always a succession of new discoveries.
